Eric’s Landscaping is a third generation construction company. August Person, Eric's grandfather, was a civil engineer who came from Sweden. He specialized in bridge design and construction building mostly in Vermont and New Hampshire. Eric's father owned a pile driving company while in Calgary, Alberta and drove all piling, and excavation for the Subway through Calgary in the early 1980's. Eric "The Viking" Person forged his own company now known as Eric's Landscaping. From a very young age Eric was taught proper techniques for grading and excavation. Eric's father had him running 65 ton link belt cranes before most kids could ride a bicycle. From there Eric took classes in segmental retaining wall installations, blueprint reading, drainage solutions, land clearing, demolition, interlocking paver driveways, and all types of Masonry. To this day Eric continues to take classes and remain certified in the newest areas of landscape design and construction, including Unilock certification. Eric has developed a multitude of skills that demonstrate his expertise in several construction areas. Benjamin Franklin had a saying, "The bitterness of poor quality, long outlasts the sweetness of low price." Thanks to generations of tradition, Eric’s Landscaping is now the premier quality landscape design and construction firm in the state. That has made America the greatest Country in the World. There is an expert in every trade, even driveways, patios, and retaining walls. There are experts in every type of work, people who are committed to excellence, who study the process, use the best materials and produce the best results. Frequently, there are unexpected issues that arise on the job, preventing either beginning the job or completing it and it may take an expert to accomplish the task. A professional who stands above the competition, creative, skilled, experienced. Other times the job looks good but fails to achieve its goals and objectives, a fact frequently discovered after the next large rain with a resulting crumbling wall or a deteriorating driveway requiring replacement a few years later. Even accomplishing a presumably simple task like putting in a walkway or a driveway, a patio or a retaining wall, building an outdoor fireplace, solving a drainage problem, there are an abundance of businesses offering such services but there are only a few who do exceptional work, sometimes achieving impossible objectives solving the tough problems and delivering an excellent job. Often it does not even cost any more, it’s just a matter of knowing the right man for the job… the experienced expert who cares. Eric Person is just that man, and while his trucks say Eric’s Landscaping, Columbia CT., he is far more. “We like to put in paver driveways, says Person, “…we guarantee it for life; it looks great and works very well. Built properly they last forever. They drain well, and do not break up from frost heaves, and look terrific. I refuse to install a hot top driveway, as it is environmentally insensitive, and deteriorates quickly requiring replacement or repair soon and does not look as good.”
“Other areas we specialize in,” explains Person, “are expanding useful land areas for the homeowner, by cutting back hills and building retaining walls. A tough job that requires skill implementing and effective design or it will all come tumbling down.” “Drainage issues are another huge problem for many, with water in the basement many attack the problem from the inside out…we attack and solve the problem for ever by creating more effective drainage systems contouring the land and redirecting the water as opposed to trying to hold it back” says Person. Patios, walkways, outside barbeques, fireplaces, stone work of all kinds…all approached with an expert’s eye in both design and execution. Additionally, beautiful design should cost no more. The right way starts well underground, were the work cannot be readily seen but this is where quality begins. In New England with our freezing winters, frost heaves destroy anything not built correctly. Drainage, sub-structure compacting and choice of materials are critical issues, which if not done precisely, will result in frost heaves destroying the effort in as soon as one winter. Unfortunately sub-structure work is expensive time consuming work and is frequently overlooked of purposely ignored as the consumer cannot see the effort or check the work. Eric however starts every job 42 inches deep, and meticulously compacts appropriate materials layering and compacting, assuring the customer that project will last for many years. Furthermore, Eric creates works of art, designed to not only be functional but also beautiful. One need only see his work to appreciate his skill. Thus, while his work may cost a little more, when one figures the value of a lifetime lasting project rather than work requiring repair and replacement every few years, Eric’s work is really a bargain. Additionally, Eric creates beauty. Who says they are not making any more land? Eric Person, landscaper extraordinaire, specializing in exceptional rock-scaping, soft-scaping and landscaping from Columbia Connecticut does just that, creates usable land were there was none. How can that be? Simple, or actually not so simple. Eric cuts back unusable hills and builds in a retaining wall holding back the remaining hill creating new usable space were there was none. This is not work for the less adventurous, as this is truly a difficult task requiring engineering understanding, design skills, skilled ground work and rock work, the right equipment, experience and a touch of boldness. Few landscapers can handle this level of project. We have focused on this type of work, developed the skills and can deliver the desired results…making more usable land. The results are stunning says Eric; we literally can create usable space where there was none. If people only knew what we can do they could buy a well located but unusable lot, unusable because of hills and gullies, and create a wonderful usable space. Others, who have purchased a home with a huge hill or gully on the lot, can now extract more space increasing their usage and enjoyment as well as increasing the value of the home. Everyone promises but most can’t deliver when it comes to water in the basement. Forget your flooded out basements whenever we get a significant drenching. Forget the sump-pumps when the spring thaw builds up. There are solutions; there are people who can solve this problem. Sometimes water in the basement can be a serious challenge, frustrating many as they repeatedly try to fix the problem from within the house and fail. Holding back the water is frequently the proposed solution. Eric Person, of Eric’s Landscaping, West Hartford and Columbia Connecticut says, “…we solve most water issues by re-routing the flow away from the house ending the problem forever. “This may require a number of strategies combined to yield the desired results, explains Person, “including earth movement, rock work, wall work, drainage materials etc. but the problem can be solved. We do it.” Few landscapers want to engage in this type of work as it is challenging and difficult, not the run of the mill job, and with limited experience, it’s a job most cannot consider. “I choose to do this type of work, because of the challenge and the terrific results we have experienced. We have developed this unique skill and have the experience to deliver the results,” says Person.
